CBSE Grading System 2026 – Calculating Percentage From CGPA: After the academic year 2010-11, CBSE has changed the resulting pattern from percentage to grading-based. The objective of this grading system was to grant grades to the students and not marks to minimize the failing concept and give students more chances to perform better.

The CBSE grading system for classes 10th and 12th will undergo some changes for the 2018 board exams. Although there have been some changes to the grading system. Below we will discuss the grading system of CBSE in detail.

CBSE Grading System 2026

In the academic year of 2010-11, CBSE announced the change in the result pattern for class 10th boards. Which stated that the students would get their results in the form of grades rather than percentages, and the total result was calculated as CGPA, this was the CCE(continuous and comprehensive grading system) grading system which was effective from 2010 to 2017

After that came the YEE (New Year-end exam) grading system which was quite confusing for most people, because of its grading technique in which students were given grades according to the comparative performance of all the students taking the exam.

The concept of these two grading systems would be better understood by the comparison table given below:

CCE Grading System (2010-17)

YEE Grading System (2018 – Present)

91 – 100 = A1

Top 1/8th of the passed students = A1

81 – 90 = A2

Next 1/8th of the passed students = A2

71 – 80 = B1

Next 1/8th of the passed students = B1

61 – 70 = B2

Next 1/8th of the passed students = B2

51 – 60 = C1

Next 1/8th of the passed students = C1

41 – 50 = C2

Next 1/8th of the passed students = C2

33 – 40 = D

Next 1/8th of the passed students = D1

21 – 32 = E1

Next 1/8th of the passed students = D2

0 – 20 = E2

Failed Students = E

Important points to remember

If there is a tie in the case of grades, then the students sharing the same grade will get the same score.

The grading system is only applicable for the subjects in which the number of passing students will be more than 500.

If the total no. of passing students is less than 500, then the grading will be according to the pattern of grading and marks distribution for other similar subjects.

Minor variations for adjusting ties will however be made.

Calculating Percentage From CGPA

The biggest trouble for the students and parents is how to determine their percentage using the cgpa. First, you need to know what cgpa is: CGPA is the cumulative grade point average which means the total average grade pointer of a student.

A student can calculate his/her percentage by directly multiplying the cgpa with 9.5. for e.g. if a student scores cgpa = 8.0 then his/her total percentage would be : 8.0 x 9.5 = 76 %. Now this percentage is not fully accurate, but it gives you an approximate total percentage.

Performance Based Grading System

This grading pattern is still used for 12th-class grading, this is the traditional grading system which was also used earlier as a CBSE grading system for classes 10th and 12th. In this, the total marks for each subject are given and then the percentage is calculated accordingly.

Hope this clears the doubt about the grading pattern for you, for scoring the best grade in your board examinations, you can visit Here.

However, the CBSE compartment exam is for those students who have failed one of the five main subjects in class 10 or class 12 board exams.

Also, an improvement exam is not necessary for you to take. However, it is mandatory for the students to give compartment exams otherwise they will have to repeat one academic year again. So, make sure you don’t get compartment in any subject.

Before going for the board exams there is a common doubt that every student has, which is about the CBSE evaluation process of the answer sheets or in simple words the pattern for checking board copies. There is no specified pattern for the checking of board copies, and this is a common doubt in almost every student’s mind they want to be clear if they will get the deserving marks for their answers or if should they use some other tricks to score well.

Check Now: CBSE Class 12th Result 2023

CBSE Evaluation Process For Class 12th 10th

How Strict Is The Evaluation Process Of CBSE? The CBSE evaluation process can’t be considered a strict one, because the guidelines given to the teachers who check the copies are not very strict. Basically it all notches down to the one who checks your copies, on average a teacher has to check nearly 40 copies in 6 or 7 hours and has to do that every day for at least 2 months. So, now you can imagine how “serious” the person would be in checking your copies. This is one of the reasons why sometimes students score more than they think they would and some face a little loss in their marks.

But you don’t have to worry much about it, because it happens in some very rare cases. Although you need to be 100% sure that you do not leave any chance for the checker to deduct your marks. There are however, no strict rules for the evaluation of your exam sheets and no one is certain about the CBSE board checking pattern.

The CBSE Evaluation Process

There are some methods involved in the evaluation process of CBSE exam papers. Do you know that there are two ways in which your answer sheets are checked, have a look at these two ways below:

1. Digital Evaluation

This is the latest added method in the evaluation process which is a bit advanced, in it a scanned copy of the student’s answer sheet is uploaded on the server and sent to the checker after which he/she checks it. This makes the transport of copies easier and the risk of the copies getting lost and misplaced is out of the picture.

Each checker has a unique ID, and the sheets are distributed to them accordingly. The checker gives the confirmation of the answer and submits the finished copies.

However, this process is not applied all over India because some checkers find it difficult to use the systems as it takes a lot of time.

2. Manual Evaluation

This is the normal method of checking the copies, you all might be aware of this evaluation method. In this method, the teachers from different schools are selected for the task of checking the copies, and then they are sent to the checking centers where they check copies at the rate of 40+ copies in 6 – 7 hours.

Useful Tricks To Score Good In The Evaluation Process

To know the tricks for scoring well in the board exams, you have to think like the checker and act accordingly. Imagine yourself as a copy checker and think about what kind of answer sheet would you expect from a student if you want to give him/her good marks.

Also, keep in mind that the teacher has to check lots of copies in less time, so they won’t have time to check each and every single mistake that you make. The teacher will look for the way the student has prepared their answer sheet, like the formatting, presentation of the answer, handwriting, etc. because let’s be honest, the teacher cannot check each and every answer on the answer sheet in detail.

However, there are some tricks, which you can use to make your answer sheet look the best and score good marks it. Let’s take a look at them below.

1. Make your answer sheet look appealing, try to answer the questions as neatly as possible, and try to avoid any cutting and double writing. Underline the important topics, and circle the resultant of derivation and the final answers, etc. Your answer sheet should look like it has been written by God himself, in short, make it the best one and you will surely score well.

2. Try to write the answers in points, that way it looks much clear and easy to understand and will surely impress the checker. Remember that tagline of the TV advertisement for apsara pencil “Extra marks for extra handwriting”.

3. Don’t let the teacher work too hard in checking your answer sheet, make it as easy as possible and you will surely score the best.

Now as stated earlier, the CBSE board checking rules are not that harsh or strict. So, the checkers mostly don’t give too much attention to the copies of students. So make your answer sheets more appealing and clean and easy to check and then you will score good marks more easily. Even if you don’t know the answer of some question, write anything you know related to that topic and you will get some marks for that which is always better than getting no marks at all.
